You press a key. The character jumps. Simple, right? But between that keypress and the action on screen, several tiny delays stack up — and in competitive gaming, those milliseconds matter.

What is Keyboard Latency?

Keyboard latency is the total time delay between when a physical key is pressed and when the corresponding input is processed by your computer. It's sometimes called "keyboard input lag" and is measured in milliseconds (ms).

Quick example: You press the fire button in a game. If your keyboard latency is 15ms, there's a 15-millisecond gap before the game engine registers the action. At 60fps, one frame takes ~16.7ms — so 15ms of keyboard lag is nearly a full frame of delay.

The 3 Components of Keyboard Latency

Total keyboard latency is actually the sum of three separate delays:

1. Scan Rate

The scan rate is how many times per second the keyboard's internal controller scans all the key switches to detect presses. A typical keyboard scans at 1000Hz (1ms). Lower-end keyboards may only scan at 125Hz (8ms between scans).

2. Polling Rate

Once a keypress is detected, the keyboard needs to report it to your PC. The polling rate is how often this report is sent — typically 1000 times per second (1000Hz = 1ms). Some gaming keyboards now offer 4000Hz or 8000Hz polling.

3. System Latency

After the signal reaches your PC, the operating system and application need to process it. This adds another 3–10ms depending on your system load, drivers, and software.

Real example: 5ms (key debounce) + 1ms (polling rate) + 5ms (system latency) = 11ms total keyboard latency. This is how most latency calculators, including our own tool, break down the number you see on screen.

Scan Rate Formula

Scan rate is calculated as: Scan Rate (Hz) = 1000 ÷ shortest key press time (ms). If your fastest recorded press is 2ms, your keyboard's estimated scan rate is 500Hz. The lower your press time, the higher your effective scan rate — and the lower your overall latency.
