How to Check for Backlight Bleed & Dead Pixels
A practical, step-by-step method to inspect any laptop or monitor screen for backlight bleed, dead pixels, and stuck pixels — before you buy, or before a return window closes.
Before You Start
- Set brightness to 100% and turn off any auto-brightness / adaptive brightness setting.
- Disable night light, blue light filters, or True Tone — these shift colors.
- Test in a dark or dimly lit room. Backlight bleed is far more visible in the dark than under normal lighting.
- Clean the screen first — dust and smudges are easy to mistake for stuck pixels.
Step 1: Check for Backlight Bleed
Backlight bleed shows up as light leaking near the edges or corners of the panel on a full black screen. It's most visible in a dark room.
- Dim your room lights as much as possible.
- Open a full black screen (our Screen Test tool has a one-click Black Screen swatch).
- Look closely at all four edges and corners for a soft glow or patchy brightness.
- Some faint bleed near the corners is normal on almost every LCD panel — heavy, uneven glowing patches are the ones worth flagging.
Step 2: Check for Dead Pixels
A dead pixel stays permanently black regardless of what color the rest of the screen shows, since it isn't receiving power.
- Run the White, Red, Green, and Blue full-screen swatches one at a time.
- On each color, scan the whole screen slowly for a small dark dot that doesn't match the background color.
- A dead pixel will show up as a dark dot on every single color — not just one.
Step 3: Check for Stuck Pixels
A stuck pixel is the opposite of a dead one — it stays fixed on a single color, usually red, green, or blue, because one subpixel is stuck on.
- Run the Black screen swatch.
- Look for a small bright colored dot against the black background — this is the clearest way to spot a stuck pixel.
- If you find one, gently note its exact position; some stuck pixels can be fixed with pressure or flicker-based methods, though results vary and there's some risk of making it worse.
Step 4: Check Uniformity and Viewing Angle
Even without dead pixels or bleed, a panel can have patchy brightness or noticeable color shift.
- Run the 50% Gray (Uniformity) swatch and look for blotchy brightness or a color tint across the panel.
- While on that screen, tilt your laptop lid slightly forward and back. TN panels shift contrast and color sharply off-angle; IPS panels stay comparatively stable — this tells you what panel type you likely have.

Some backlight bleed is present on nearly every LCD panel — it's a byproduct of manufacturing tolerances, not necessarily a fault. What matters is severity: faint, even glow confined to the corners is normal; bright, uneven patches spreading toward the center of the screen are worth raising with the seller or manufacturer. For dead and stuck pixels, most manufacturers publish a specific pixel policy (often tied to ISO 9241-307 classes) defining how many are acceptable before a unit qualifies for replacement — check your manufacturer's policy directly, since thresholds vary significantly between brands.
